Gryphon® Product Line - Firmware Information

[S-CAT, S-CAT2, Gryphon S3, Gryphon, and Gryphon 2]

Note: We encourage you to upgrade your firmware and/or patches to the most current release to benefit from fixed problems and new features. Certain applications such as Hercules may require you to upgrade. Please review the firmware patch area on how to identify the firmware and/or patch versions. If you are having problems with your firmware release and the upgrade to the most current release does not fix your problem, or for previous firmware releases, contact Dearborn Group Customer Support for assistance.

The following firmware release resources are available.

Things you should know:

  • For this document, the term 'hardware' refers to the S-CAT, S-CAT2, Gryphon S3, Gryphon, and Gryphon 2 products.
  • You can identify the firmware currently installed on the hardware by viewing the internal Web Page, the front panel display (Gryphon or Gryphon 2), or the About menu screen in Hercules (Choose Help -> About Hercules).
  • When possible, the updater program will carry over the currently assigned TCP/IP settings, administration passwords, and system program configuration to the installed firmware.
  • The Updater Program only supports upgrading from firmware version 20021008 or later. If you have an older release installed on your hardware, please contact Customer Support for assistance.
  • Patch files are not cumulative (i.e. Patch D does not contain changes from the previous patches). In addition, patches must be applied sequentially from A to D.
  • As of 20070629 firmware, there is no longer a separate "Gateway" release. This functionailty has been included in all firmware variants.

Updater Program     ( Firmware Release | Firmware Patches | Firmware Archive )

This program is for Gryphon products. It is used to apply Firmware Releases and incremental firmware patches that may become available before a formal release, or to install patches to older firmware releases. It also includes support to browse for, and identify, Zeroconf aware Gryphon/S-CAT/S-CAT2 products on a network.

CAUTION: Your firmware will be overwritten. Any files or settings that you want to preserve should be copied to a different location prior to upgrading your firmware.

Warning: You must manually reboot (power off, power on) the hardware immediately after the reflash procedure.

  6. After you reboot the hardware, visually confirm that the revised firmware release number is displayed in the LCD screen (Gryphon or Gryphon 2 only). You can also go to the hardware web page for this confirmation.

Firmware Patches     ( Updater Program | Firmware Release | Firmware Archive )

Download Files and Installation Procedure

  • There are no patches at this time

Things you should know:

  • The patch file will only update a firmware that contains the same date. If the firmware release number is not the same, you must upgrade the hardware to the current firmware (i.e., 20041216) prior to installing the patches.
  • Firmware releases are of the type *.dd.gz and patch files are of the type *.pgz. When using this application, select the correct file type extension for the file to be used (e.g., the default value is *.dd.gz; therefore, change the file type and select the ".pgz" extension when loading the 'patch' file.
  • You must reboot the hardware after applying each patch.
  • If a patch is applied, it cannot be uninstalled. The firmware must be reloaded.
  • The hardware Firmware Release and patch information is displayed on the Web Browser Page. In addition the Gryphon LCD display will indicate the patch and the Firmware Release information. It will show "Patch 'x' GRYPHON_20041216" - where 'x' is a hexadecimal digit that represents information about the installed patches and GRYPHON_20041216 represents the firmware release that resides on the Gryphon. The 'x' is NOT a patch number. The S-CAT and S-CAT2 Firmware Release and patch name is displayed on the Web Browser page.

Below is an example of the Patch information displayed on the Web Browser page:

The following table illustrates how the patch information is interpreted:

Firmware patch 20041216_Patch-A. This patch is for Gryphon, S-CAT, and S-CAT2 products. It corrects the following minor problems.

  1. It is possible for one channel of an SJA1000 Single Wire CAN card to affect the same relative channel number on another card. The patch removes any such interactions.
  2. The USDT server was modified to be able to generate a 'Done' event when a UUDT (single frame) message is sent.
  3. The USDT server was fixed to not crash when unregistering a client after having processed a message with 4095 bytes of data. A buffer overflow was the cause of the crash.
  4. The USDT server was fixed to automatically turn on the Nagle algorithm when sending out five or more CAN messages for an incoming USDT message from a client. Doing so increases the throughput by up to a factor of three.

Firmware patch 20041216_Patch-B. This patch is for Gryphon, S-CAT and S-CAT2 products. It adds Zeroconf (aka Bonjour) support (see Zeroconf Overview) to Dearborn Group's Gryphon, S-CAT, S-CAT2, VNG, Falcon and Gateway products. The Zeroconf support means that these products will now self-configure. This means that if you have the DHCP Server option selected in the Gryphon/S-CAT/S-CAT2, when it is powered up it will check to see if a DHCP Server is already present and if so the Gryphon will revert to a Static configuration. In addition, when you connect the Gryphon/S-CAT/S-CAT2 to the PC/laptop computer it will automatically configure correctly.

Firmware patch 20041216_Patch-C. This patch is for Gryphon, S-CAT, and S-CAT2 products. It includes the following changes.

  1. The LIN driver has been updated to support the new LIN 2.0 card.
  2. The USDT server has been modified to be able to accurately time consecutive frames. This will result in considerably faster transfers of large blocks of data.
  3. A minor bug in the USDT server was fixed in the processing of consecutive frames with no delays. This will result in slightly faster transfers of large blocks of data.
Please Note: The potential for lost messages under heavy bus loading has been identified when Patch C is applied to an S-CAT 2 that has any expansion cards installed. It is recommended that Patch C not be used under these circumstances.

Firmware patch 20041216_Patch-D. This patch is for Gryphon, S-CAT, and S-CAT2 products. It includes the following changes.

  1. The USDT frames out of sequence issue has been corrected. This applies to the GM DPS application.
  2. The kernel has been modified to work with 128meg and larger disks. This applies to S-CAT2's only.
  3. Support for the atheros WIFI card has been added. This applies to S-CAT2's only.
  4. Web page configuration for the atheros card has been added. This applies to S-CAT2's only.
  5. The SJA1000 family of drivers has been fixed to allow the card to operate after transmitting 7,500 messages while receiving none.
  6. The pinout information for the SJA1000 SW CAN card has been corrected.

Things you should know:

  • Firmware releases are of the type *.dd.gz and patch files are of the type *.pgz. When using this application, select the correct file type extension for the file to be used (e.g., the default value is *.dd.gz; therefore, change the file type and select the ".pgz" extension when loading the 'patch' file.
